It’s not about the fall, it’s about the bounce

We can all be inspirational and its sometime really hard to judge someone by what you see. This guy is amazing and by sharing his story it shows you how we can help others…

My name is Jason Anker, I have been a permanent wheelchair user since 1993, after being paralysed from the waist down after falling 10 feet from an unsecured ladder on a building site. I was just 24 years old. Life as I knew it changed in so many ways both physically and mentally. I found it near impossible to come to terms with my disability and ashamedly I turned to drink and drugs, cumulating in an unintentional drugs overdose in 1995. I managed to turn my life around and brought up my 2 children by myself but I still hadn’t come to terms with my disability. The turning point for me happen just over 10 years ago when I was encouraged to share my story. I found a new sense of self-worth and a reason for being. I have now travelled presenting extensively in the UK, Europe and Worldwide. My talks now focus as much on health and wellbeing as they do on safety and ironically for nearly a decade my original safety speech was about inspiring people to ‘not be like me’ but now I talk about the opportunities and experiences I have had since being in a wheelchair and so the story is now ‘be like me’.
